Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017 – Amid the COVID Pandemic

Date: Monday, April 20, 2020
Time: 1:30 am – 2:30 am Eastern

The Women Peace and Security Act of 2017, represented years of bipartisan work by Members of Congress, current and prior administrations and many advocates who understood the critical role that women play in resolving conflicts, combatting terrorism, and improving human rights around the world. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the worldwide crisis of domestic abuse resulting from efforts to combat the pandemic, demonstrate the challenges to implementing this strategy, or any other strategy or attempt to empower women. One of the key premises of our new WPS National Strategy is that women and girls need to be safe from violence, abuse and exploitation around the world, in order for them to be able to meaningfully participate in any efforts at peace keeping or stability. And yet, in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, we know that they are not safe.
